Today,let us show you how to test the power supply on a desktop computer to make sure it could work normally.
- Firstly, you can check whether the power supply or laptop battery all in good contact by gently shaking the power connector or battery. If not, try to reinstall the power supply or battery. The problem maybe the deformation of the power connector or the decrease of the elasticity of the battery contacts.
- If the power supply or battery connector is good, use a multimeter to measure the output voltage of the power supply or battery, mainly to check whether the output voltage is stable.
- If the above detection steps are normal, it can be inferred that the problem is on the laptop power board or motherboard, and the laptop case needs to be opened up.
- If the power board and the battery are in good contact, use the replacement method commonly used in DIY to check whether the power board is normal. If not, replace it.
If the power plug has a fuse and the lead is ‘no go’ then extract the fuse and test it separately.
Without a multimeter of some sort a lead is difficult to test. The solution is to try substitution. (You could do it with a battery and a torch bulb or LED and a few bits of wire.)
A good lead (even one from a kettle) will work virtually any electronic device. A device lead will not connect to a kettle. A PC lead should have a low value fuse, typically 3A in Europe.
I can pinpoint a break in a lead with a capacitance meter, but that is another story.
Simple analogue multimeters are for measuring. The black lead is for connecting to the most negative point and the red to a positive test point (otherwise the pointer will move backwards). However, when testing for resistance the polarity is the other way round. The black lead is positive in relation to the red lead. This is of no importance except when dealing with electronics… diodes in particular. Just remember this if you are new to electronics.
